More Breakthrough Performance for De Beers

Exceed’s relationship with De Beers Marine Namibia (DBMN) continues to flourish with the announcement of a second phase of Breakthrough Performance, a performance coaching and continuous improvement project. The second phase will be rolled out across the fleet of five diamond mining vessels.

The first phase of Breakthrough Performance (BTP) began with a 12 month implementation on the mining vessel ‘Ya Toivo’ in 2005. As a result asset utilisation improved from a 2004 baseline of 67% to a Q1 2006 result of 80% with an annual financial impact of N$ 62,400,000 ($8.9 Million).

“If you look at how performance is being managed on the Ya Toivo, there’s a day and night difference.”

Jan Nel, DBMN Operations Manager (January 25, 2006)

The successful implementation of BTP on the Ya Toivo resulted in a roll out of BTP Coaching for Supervisors across DBMN’s 4 other mining vessels. This ‘Phase 1’ programme will be completed in August 2008 and, beginning in September 2008, an 18 month BTP Phase 2 implementation will begin across the DBMN fleet. Phase 2 will focus on greater crew involvement in the continuous improvement principles developed with supervisors in Phase 1. Front line improvement teams will enhance workplace accountability and motivation whilst improving the crew’s capacity for self – managed and results focused endeavours.

To set up BTP Phase 2 for success, a 3-day workshop was designed and is currently being delivered by Exceed Coaches Angela Wigham and Dave Berlando. This interactive training focuses on providing business skills and continuous improvement skills for all sea-going personnel from supervisors to front line workers. The workshops provide a combination of foundational principles, interaction and experiential learning and assist in establishing a coaching platform.

Exceed’s relationship as a trusted ‘Partner in Performance’ with De Beers Marine Nambia has grown from 2 Performance Coaches in 2005 to 5 Coaches in 2008. It has become a model to other Exceed clients of how to achieve results through mutual respect, integrity and clear accountability in the roles of Coaches and Managers.
