Maximise Pre-Learning with DWOP / CWOP Workshops

plan ahead

When dealing with high-cost operations, downtime and delays can have huge financial impact. The purpose of a 'Drill the Well on Paper' (DWOP) or 'Complete the Well on Paper' (CWOP) workshop is to plan, anticipate the unexpected, and Learn Before by bringing together the key stakeholders in the Drilling or Completions project to go through the entire exercise on paper prior to project start.

flaringThe objective of a DWOP / CWOP is to handover the well or completion design rationale, incorporate the relevant rig operational experience and get the plan fit for purpose for the selected rig. The workshop brings together a multi-disciplinary team representing office and rig team with the purpose of reviewing the design strategy and service company plans, learn from previous similar projects, communicate the plan to all service providers and identify and mitigate any risks.

A DWOP/CWOP ideally takes place early on in the project to ensure sufficient time to capitalise on the opportunities for improvement and agree on any risk contingency plans.

Objectives:

  1. Communicate the HSE expectations, the Well business case, the objectives & the design strategy
  2. Communicate the historical risks, lessons, Non Productive Time, offset analysis & key findings
  3. Create an opportunity for the office team, rig team, and service providers to get to know one another
  4. Create ownership of the plan between the Planning and the execution team.
  5. Identify the project schedule , the logistics and resource requirements & timing
  6. Agree the Actions, the execution plan and rig based plan, do, measure & learning activities

Key reference information for workshop participants include the Well & Completion design, Offset analysis & benchmarking studies, Drilling Fluid Systems, Cementing requirements, Directional & BHA’s, LWD/ Data requirements, Coring requirements, Logging requirements etc.

DWOP / CWOP participants must include representation from all three parties involved in the project (Operator, Contractor and Service Providers). For the workshop to be effective, there also needs to be a good balance between office-based personnel and people actually working at the rig site.

Workshop participants typically include Senior Management (e.g. Field Manager, Delivery Manager, HOD), Subsurface Team (Geologist, Reservoir, Petrophysicist), Completion, Subsea Specialist, Drilling Superintendent, Senior Drilling Engineer, Logistics Co-ordinator, HSE Representative, Drilling Contractor, Rig Management, Drilling Supervisors, Toolpushers, Drillers, Rig Safety Rep, Logistics Coordinator, and all key Service Providers
